SSRI Side Effects: How to Educate Patients for Better Adherence

Common Challenges with SSRIs

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are among the most commonly prescribed antidepressants in mental health care. Despite their widespread use, patients often struggle with SSRI side effects, especially early in treatment.

One challenge clinicians face is that SSRI benefits may take several weeks to become noticeable, but side effects can appear almost immediately. This timing mismatch can lead patients to discontinue their medications prematurely.

Why Patients Stop Taking SSRIs

Patients typically stop SSRIs for two main reasons:

  • They don’t notice any improvement in symptoms soon enough.
  • They experience uncomfortable or unexpected side effects.

Without clear communication, these factors can undermine adherence and, ultimately, treatment success.

Explaining SSRI Side Effects Clearly

One of the best ways to support adherence is by providing a simple, clear explanation about how these side effects occur. I often spend a few minutes educating patients about what to expect. This preparation helps patients anticipate symptoms, reducing worry and increasing their willingness to stay on the medication.

Here’s a quick video where I explain why SSRI side effects occur for patients.

Re-Educating Patients on Antidepressants

Even patients who have been prescribed antidepressants in the past may not have received a clear explanation about how SSRIs work or their side effects. I find it helpful to revisit this education whenever possible. Don’t assume patients already know this information.
